Why are pelvic floor exercises so important for postpartum healing?

It’s normal for the pelvic floor to feel different after pregnancy and birth. These muscles support the bladder, bowel, and pelvic organs, and they can be stretched or weakened during pregnancy and childbirth. Pelvic floor exercises can help rebuild strength, coordination, and function as part of postpartum recovery.

Regular pelvic floor exercises can support bladder and bowel control, improve pelvic floor function, and help you gradually return to everyday activities and exercise. Recovery is individual, so exercises should be progressed gradually and adapted to your symptoms and stage of healing.

  • Pelvic floor exercises can help rebuild strength and coordination after pregnancy and birth.
  • Start gently and focus on both contracting and fully relaxing the pelvic floor.
  • Gradually increase the challenge as strength and control improve.
  • If you experience pain, heaviness, bulging, or leaking that doesn’t improve, seek assessment from a pelvic health physiotherapist.

The role of pelvic floor exercises in postnatal recovery

Healing your pelvic floor after birth is one of the most important things you can do for your postpartum recovery. A strong pelvic floor will help reduce symptoms of incontinence and prolapse and optimise your postnatal recovery. As a physio-led program, we are passionate about helping you heal your pelvic floor safely and confidently after birth.

Supporting the Organs of the Pelvis During Rest and Movement

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and tissues that support the bladder, uterus, and bowel. During pregnancy and childbirth, these muscles can stretch and weaken, reducing their ability to provide proper support. Strengthening and retraining the pelvic floor helps restore stability and ensures the organs remain supported both at rest and during movement.

Supporting the Pelvic Organs

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and connective tissues, including the levator ani, which forms the deepest layer responsible for core pelvic support. Together, these muscles create a supportive sling for the bladder, uterus, and bowel. During pregnancy and childbirth, the levator ani and surrounding tissues stretch and can weaken, reducing their ability to stabilise the pelvis and control pressure effectively. Rebuilding strength and coordination through guided pelvic floor exercises helps restore this vital support system, improving stability, bladder control, and comfort in everyday movement.

Reducing Symptoms of Prolapse

Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when the bladder, uterus, or bowel shift downward due to weakened pelvic floor muscles. This can cause sensations of heaviness, pressure, or discomfort in the pelvic area. Targeted pelvic floor exercises help lift and support these organs, improving muscle strength and coordination to ease symptoms and enhance daily comfort.

Maintaining continence

Pregnancy and childbirth place significant strain on the muscles that support and control the bladder and bowel, sometimes leading to leakage, urgency, or reduced control. Evidence consistently shows that pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) is one of the most effective ways to prevent and treat postnatal incontinence. Targeted, physio-led exercises help strengthen and retrain the levator ani and surrounding muscles, improving bladder control, restoring confidence, and supporting comfort and stability in everyday movement.

Increasing pleasure and sensation during sex

After pregnancy, gentle strengthening and relaxation exercises can help restore this connection, improving comfort, confidence, and intimacy. Rebuilding pelvic floor awareness supports not only recovery but also overall sexual wellbeing.

Maintaining continence

Pregnancy and childbirth can place extra strain on the muscles that control the bladder and bowel, sometimes leading to leakage or urgency. Through targeted pelvic floor training, these muscles can be strengthened and retrained to improve control, restore confidence, and support everyday comfort and movement.

What is the EMP approach to Pelvic Floor Exercises?

What is the EMP approach to Pelvic Floor Exercises?

Maintaining a strong pelvic floor will help reduce your chances of experiencing long-term pelvic floor complications such as prolapse and incontinence. The Empowered Motherhood Program will help you to heal your pelvic floor after birth and feel strong and confident.

Activation and Connection

Studies show that around half of all women cannot correctly activate their pelvic floor muscles, but with the right guidance, you can learn how to do it effectively. In the Empowered Motherhood Program, we use real-time ultrasound to show you exactly how your pelvic floor moves, helping you connect with and strengthen these important muscles.

If you’re experiencing prolapse, avulsion, or incontinence, our specialised pelvic floor workouts are designed to support recovery and build lasting strength. Targeted pelvic floor training can help to:

  • Improve coordination and muscle control.
  • Enhance pelvic organ support and reduce symptoms of prolapse.
  • Restore bladder and bowel control.
  • Increase confidence and comfort in daily movement.

Progressive Loading

Not seeing the results you expected? Doing a few pelvic floor exercises occasionally isn’t enough to rebuild true strength. Like any muscle, the pelvic floor needs regular and progressive training to recover and perform well.

The Empowered Motherhood Program uses a step-by-step approach, gradually increasing load and challenge to match your body’s healing journey.

Progressive loading helps to:

  • Strengthen and tone the pelvic floor muscles.
  • Improve coordination and endurance.
  • Support the bladder, uterus, and bowel.
  • Reduce symptoms of heaviness or leakage.
  • Restore confidence and control in movement.
