Can EMDR Therapy Help You Heal After a Traumatic Birth?

Can EMDR Therapy Help You Heal After a Traumatic Birth?

With Dr Rosie Pajak - Clinical Psychologist and Founder of the Birth Healing Institute

If you've experienced a difficult or traumatic birth, you may find that the physical recovery is only part of the healing process. For many parents, the emotional impact can last long after their baby is born.

You might replay parts of your birth over and over, feel anxious when you think about it, or carry feelings of guilt, shame, anger, or failure. Sometimes these emotions are so overwhelming that they affect your confidence, your relationship with your baby, or even your thoughts about having another child.

One therapy that has shown great promise for birth trauma is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing).

Birth Trauma Is About More Than What Happened

Many people assume that birth trauma only occurs after a medical emergency or life-threatening complication.

But trauma isn't defined only by the events themselves.

Often, it's about how the experience made you feel.

You may have felt frightened, powerless, unheard, unsupported, or like things happened too quickly for you to process. Even if your baby was born healthy, your emotional experience still matters.

Some parents develop symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), while others experience ongoing anxiety, intrusive memories, emotional numbness, or persistent sadness that doesn't seem to go away.

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing.

It is a specialised therapy originally developed to treat trauma. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn't simply focus on discussing what happened, it helps your brain process distressing memories so they become less emotionally overwhelming.

During EMDR sessions, a therapist guides you through recalling aspects of the traumatic memory while using bilateral stimulation, such as:

  • Following side-to-side eye movements
  • Gentle tapping
  • Alternating vibrations held in each hand

These techniques help your brain process the memory differently, reducing its emotional intensity over time.

Why Traumatic Birth Memories Can Feel "Stuck"

Normally, our brains gradually process difficult experiences.

Over time, memories become less distressing, and the emotional intensity naturally fades.

After trauma, however, that process can become interrupted.

Instead of becoming a normal life memory, the birth experience may remain "stuck," causing you to relive the fear, distress, or physical sensations whenever something reminds you of it.

EMDR aims to restart this natural healing process so the memory can be stored without triggering the same overwhelming emotional response.

How Can EMDR Help After Birth Trauma?

It can reduce intrusive memories and flashbacks

One of the biggest benefits of EMDR is reducing the emotional and physical intensity attached to traumatic memories.

Many parents report that while they still remember what happened, it no longer feels like they're reliving the experience every time they think about it.

It can calm your nervous system

Birth trauma often leaves your body on high alert.

You may constantly worry that something bad will happen to your baby, struggle to relax, or feel emotionally disconnected.

As traumatic memories are processed, EMDR can help reduce this ongoing sense of danger and allow you to feel calmer and safer in everyday life.

It can help release guilt, shame and self-blame

Many parents carry painful beliefs after a traumatic birth, including:

"I failed."
"My body let me down."
"I should have done something differently."

EMDR helps process these emotions and allows you to develop a more balanced, compassionate understanding of your experience.

Rather than being defined by your birth, many parents find they are finally able to make peace with it.

Can EMDR Help If You're Planning Another Pregnancy?

For many parents, a previous traumatic birth creates significant fear about giving birth again.

EMDR can help process the psychological impact of your previous experience so you can approach another pregnancy feeling more prepared, confident, and empowered.

Many people use EMDR specifically to reduce birth-related fears and strengthen their confidence in advocating for themselves during future births.

Is EMDR Right for Everyone?

Like any therapy, EMDR isn't the right choice for every person or every situation.

However, when delivered by a qualified therapist experienced in trauma and perinatal mental health, it can be a highly effective treatment that often leads to meaningful improvements in a relatively short period of time.

If you're considering EMDR, it's important to choose a clinician who has completed recognised EMDR training and has experience supporting parents after traumatic birth.

The Key Message

Healing after a traumatic birth isn't about forgetting what happened.

It's about reaching a point where your birth story no longer controls how you feel every day.

If memories of your birth continue to cause distress, anxiety, or feelings of shame, EMDR may offer a pathway towards healing, helping you process the experience, regain confidence, and move forward with greater peace.

When to Seek Support

If you're experiencing persistent anxiety, intrusive memories, flashbacks, emotional numbness, or ongoing distress after birth, speak with your GP, psychologist, obstetrician, midwife, or another qualified healthcare professional.

Early support can make a significant difference to your recovery, and you don't have to navigate birth trauma alone.
